2010 Criteria for the Kentucky Conference

Purpose:

Ø       Energize United Methodist Women to be more involved in mission through prayer, study and action;

Ø       Expand concepts of mission, including social justice as mission

Ø       Celebrate the unique ways United Methodust Women DO mission in their communities and beyond

Ø       Increase contacts between units and mission personnel and mission projects so that United Methodist Women understand where their money goes to be personally connected and invested in mission; and

Ø       Encourage use of mission resources through United Methodist Women; and

Ø       Expand concepts of mission, including social justice as mission.

 

Recognizing that every viable unit of United Methodist Women is engaged in mission today, the Kentucky Conference encourages every unit to become a Mission Today Unit.  By sharing yearly activities, each unit will encourage other units to exterience and share the joys that being a Mission Today Unit brings. Accomplishments and participation will be recognized each year at the  Conference and District Annual Meetings. While there are many ways to do mission, we encourage inclusion of the following ideas and suggestions. *Starred items those we feel will be essential to the Mission Today Purpose.

*1. The Unit will make and meet their Pledge to Mission.  This criteria must be completed for any level or recognition.

*2. The Unit will use the Prayer Calendar at each general meeting of the unit to pray for persons in mission and for our mission work with women, children and youth. They will correspond with five (5) missionaries listed in the Prayer Calendar at least twice a year.    *3. The Unit will add at least two (2) new members to their roll.  Units with fewer than 20 members qualify by adding one (1) new member . *4. At least one (1) members per Unit will subscribe to the Response magazine. They will include a Response Moment at each general meeting as a way to tell the mission story.  New World Outlook magazine provides another good way to tell the mission story. *5. Each Unit will use at least two programs from the Program Book  for United Methodist Women. (Order from the Mission  Resource Center, Stock #M3029 for 2009 for $7.  Order on-line at  http://www.missionresourcecenter.org/wdstore/

*6. A Mini Mission Study willbe conducted in rah Distrit following School of Christian Mission. At least one (1) member of each Unit will attend a Conference or District Study or the Unit will conduct one study with a minimum of four (4) hours. (Contact your District for areas of study)  *7.The Unit will implement the Charter for Racial Justice Policies in at least 2 ways during the year.  See your Annual Conference Directory for suggestions.  (Charter for Racial Justice Polices can be ordered from the Mission Resource Center, Stock #M5005 free.  Order on-line at http://www.missionresourcecenter.org/wdstore/  8. The Unit will have at least two (2) members attend the  Conference or District Spiritual Growth Retreat or the district Spring Day Apart. Units with fewer than 20 members one (1) member must attend.

 

  

  9. Two (2) persons other than a Conference or District officer from that Unit will attend the District or Conference Annual Meeting.  Units with fewer than 20 members shall have one (1) in attendance.                                                                                                                                                                            *10. The Unit will have one member join the United Methodist Women’s Action Network to receive and respond to legislative information.  11. The Unit will participate in the Campaign for Children in at least two (2) ways. (order from Mission Resource Center Stock #3223 for $5) Also see:  www.gbgm-umc.org/umw/ or handbook pg 20) 

12. The Unit will be a Five Star Unit, contributing to all five (5) channels of mission giving. (These are:  Pledge to Missions, Special Mission Recognition, Gift to Mission, Gift in Memory and World Thank Offering.)

   13. Units will have at least 2 members complete one of the Reading Program plans and report on one of the books read. (2011 Reading Program lists available from Mission Resource Center, Stock #M5025 free.  Order on-line at: http://www.missionresourcecenter.org/wdstore/).

   14. The Unit will have one program provided by a District or Conference Officer  who does not belong to that Unit (Ex. Officer Update)

   15. The Unit will pledge to  care for God's creation become a "Green" Unit as directed by Women's Division. Get information at http:/www.umwonline.org/environment or contact Women's Division Offie of Community Action.

 16. The Unit will have at least one program during the year from the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church. (Available from the Mission Resource Center, Stock #3666, 1-9 copies $0.50 each—less for more ordered.  Order on-line at http://www.missionresourcecenter.org/wdstore/)

 *17.  THe Unit will participate in at least one of the Women's Division approved mission projects.

18. The Unit will have at least one (1) member particapate in a personal Mission Encounter ar a United Methodist site or as arranged by the Conference. Assembly will count as an encounter.)

 19.  Each Unit will participate in one local mission project

20. The Unit will contribute beyond 5-Star giving by participating in either the Penny and Prayer or Candle-Burning.  (See also #12)     

21. The Unit will remit completed criteria report form fo te District by August 15.

A Mission Today Unit must complete #1 plus one (*) starred item from each of the following categories plus any four other numbered items.

v      Open Hearts - *2, ,12, *17, 19,  20

v      Open Minds - *4, *5, 9, 10, 13, 1, 21        

v      Mpen Doors -  *3, *6, *7, 11, 14, 15, 18

10,000 Doors - Special recognition for those Units completing at least four of the crieria in each designation, including at least one starred item ineach category         

Completing 16, including 4 with asterisks

v     Mission Today Platinum Unit
